Persepolis

Director: Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi 95 minutes. Rated: PG-13

Film Synopsis

This animated film, based on a graphic novel, is the poignant story of a young girl in Iran during the Islamic Revolution.  It is through the eyes of precocious and outspoken nine-year old Marjane that we see a people’s hopes dashed as fundamentalists take power – forcing the veil on women and imprisoning thousands.  Clever and fearless, she outsmarts the “social guardians” and discovers punk.  Yet when her uncle is senselessly executed and as bombs fall around Tehran in the Iran/Iraq war, the daily fear that permeates life in Iran is palpable.   Persepolis received numerous major awards across the globe for its striking independence and heartfelt characterizations.

"Cinematic poetry in black and white. It also is a deeply affecting tale of the power of resilience and an unflagging sense of humor through the worst of situations" Claudia Puig, USA Today

"
While so many films about coming of age involve manufactured dilemmas, here is one about a woman who indeed does come of age, and magnificently." Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
